I taught at DEPSA for many years and all is not what it seems. MEAP Tests were not held in compliance with state regulations, and in fact certain teachers and curriculum coordinators actually cheated and changed student responses. Teacher retention was a huge problem, as teachers who did not agree with the way things were done were pushed out. Some very good teachers left because they were undervalued and were not permitted to be 'free thinkers'. The school became know to staff as the "Bland Academy" after the Superintendent Mr Bland and Mrs Bland the curriculum administrator and ex-principal; as if you did not do things the Bland way then you were made to feel very uncomfortable and your contract was not renewed. Many of the teachers were not qualified, and at times inappropriate. Memorable memos include, "Staff must wear underwear at all times" and the like.<br>So although the scores may appear to be better and children appear to be doing better than their DPS peers, when official tests are compromised, then in fact the children are doing worse. I am not saying DEPSA doesn't have some good qualities, but it is NOT a role model for how charter schools should be run. DEPSA had/has some very dedicated teachers, and their dedication to the children is not in question.
